Here at the Getaway Guide, we’re all about enjoying travel in the UK and Europe. So it’s no surprise that we tend to lean towards making travel plans, whether you’re going on a day trip in your local area, heading off on a city break or going for a longer holiday.

Making plans helps you get the most from your travel and reduces the risk of unexpected problems. However, sometimes the best weekends are the ones you don’t plan too far in advance.

Leaving room for a little spontaneity brings a sense of fun and freedom that can often be missing from overfilled schedules.

So, if you’re looking at an empty weekend in your diary, here are some easy ideas for spontaneous fun.

Say yes to a quick getaway

Travel doesn’t always have to be planned for weeks or months in advance.

If you’ve got a free weekend and feel like a change of scenery, you could search online for a quick city break, short trips nearby or even last-minute deals on cruises.

You don’t need weeks of planning to enjoy a new place, and even getting away for a night or two can refresh your mood. Keep it simple, pack a small bag and head off on a mini adventure.

Be a local tourist

You don’t always need to travel far to find something new, so why not use your free weekend to explore somewhere close to home?

Staying local might not feel as adventurous as travelling abroad, but it can be just as exciting if you approach it with a traveller’s mindset.

There are probably loads of places within easy reach that you’ve never visited. Maybe you’ll pop to a local park, visit a fascinating museum of local history or take a walk along the nearby coast.

Try a new food spot

You’ve probably got your favourite local eateries, but it can be fun to shake up your routine with somewhere new to eat. So, gather your friends or family and pick a restaurant or cafe you’ve never tried before.

It can be fun to try out a cuisine that’s new to you and ask the owners what they recommend rather than trying to choose something off the menu yourself. Maybe you’ll discover a new favourite dish or decide to try replicating the meal at home.

A simple meal out can turn into a highlight of your weekend, especially if you bring friends along for the ride.

Get outdoors and move

Getting outside in the fresh air has been shown to be beneficial for mental health. Even if you’re spending most of the weekend at home, a few hours outdoors will help you reset after the work week.

If you’re feeling active, you could go on a hike or bike ride in your local area or further afield. Spending time by the water is also a great way to boost your mental health. You could take a walk along the local river or canal, visit a lake or head off to the coast for a dose of ‘vitamin sea’.

Even a quick stroll through a nearby park can help you feel energised, and there’s always the chance of enjoying a coffee or ice-cream if the weather’s good.

Share your spontaneity

Spontaneous plans can be even more fun when they’re shared with someone else. Why not call a friend or a family member and see if they want to join you?

Including another person in your weekend doesn’t mean you suddenly need a complicated plan. You could enjoy a casual outing, share a meal or maybe snag a couple of tickets to a last-minute gig.

Whatever you end up doing, sharing the experience with someone else means you’ll both have a better weekend.

Enjoy a ‘no plan’ weekend

All of the suggestions above are fairly low-effort activities that only need a little planning. But what if you don’t feel like making plans at all?

It’s perfectly fine to give yourself permission to take a ‘no plan’ day or two. Wake up without a schedule, start your day slowly and simply see what happens.

Perhaps you’ll go for a walk or browse a local market, maybe you won’t. You could just spend time at home watching films or reading, or giving yourself an impromptu pamper session.

Whatever you choose to do, letting the day unfold naturally feels surprisingly refreshing.

The beauty of a spontaneous weekend is that you don’t have to have strict plans and checks to keep everything in order. You get to enjoy the simple moments and give yourself a break from the everyday routine.

Stay open to new ideas and watch your ordinary weekend turn into something that’s anything but ordinary!
