Running a travel blog is an exciting way to see the world – I should know, I’ve been running this blog since 2012!

I’ve been lucky to work with some fantastic brands, staying in beautiful hotels like Hotel Portmeirion, exploring fascinating destinations and attending exciting events like the British Grand Prix.

It can also be a great way to make money. But how can you earn money through travel blogging?

Of course, travel blogging should be about more than just making money. If you’re passionate about travel, chances are you started writing because you wanted to share your experiences, connect with people who love the same things you do and document your adventures along the way.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to earn some money from it too.

Blogging takes time, effort and plenty of dedication. Between writing posts, editing photos, managing social media and keeping your website running, it can be a very time-consuming hobby.

So, if you’re putting in all of that work, it makes sense to explore ways to turn it into an income stream.

The good news is that there are several ways travel bloggers can earn money, and many people combine multiple methods rather than relying on just one. Read on to discover some ways you can realistically bring in money by running a travel blog.

Promoting Brands

Once you’ve built an audience that trusts your recommendations, brands may be interested in working with you. Travel companies are constantly looking for new ways to reach potential customers, and bloggers can be a great way of doing that.

Sponsored content allows you to create posts that highlight a product, service or destination in exchange for payment.

The important thing is to work with businesses that make sense for your audience. There’s no point promoting something completely unrelated just because somebody offers you money. Readers can spot that a mile away!

If you’re known for family travel, for example, promoting family-friendly destinations and products will always feel more natural than advertising backpacking adventures in the Andes, for example.

Become An Affiliate

Affiliate marketing is one of the most common ways bloggers make money, and for good reason.

It’s relatively simple to get started and can provide passive income long after a post has been published. In basic terms, affiliate marketing means placing links containing your personal affiliate code within your content. You then earn a commission if somebody clicks through your link and makes a purchase.

The great thing about affiliate marketing is that travel bloggers have plenty of opportunities for affiliate marketing. Hotels and flights, travel insurance and car rental, as well as tours and attractions, often have affiliate programmes available.

The key is making recommendations that genuinely fit the content you’re creating. Readers are much more likely to click on a recommendation if it feels natural and helpful rather than forced.

Plan Great Trips

One of the biggest reasons people follow travel bloggers is because they want inspiration. They want to know where to stay, what to see and what experiences are worth spending money on.

This creates opportunities to earn income by recommending destinations, attractions and accommodation. Some travel planning platforms allow creators to upload photos, reviews and travel guides, rewarding them when their recommendations lead to bookings.

This type of promotion doesn’t need you to visit exotic destinations to make it work. Some of the most popular travel content online focuses on local adventures and affordable getaways.

You can buy a tent, head to a campsite for the weekend and still create content that people find useful and inspiring.

Sell Your Photography

Many travel bloggers underestimate the value of their photos. While your friends might not be interested in paying for holiday pictures, businesses and websites often need high-quality travel images.

Stunning landscape shots, city skylines, beaches and local attractions can all have commercial value. There are stock photography websites like Depositphotos that allow you to upload your images and earn money whenever they’re downloaded.

It won’t make you rich overnight, but it can become another useful income stream. The better your photography becomes, the more opportunities you’ll have to sell your work to businesses, publications and tourism organisations.

Make Videos Too

Travel content also works incredibly well in video form. Sometimes a destination is much easier to showcase through movement and sound than it is through photos alone.

Videos can also help strengthen your relationship with your audience because people feel like they’re experiencing the trip alongside you rather than simply reading about it afterwards.

Platforms such as YouTube give travel bloggers another opportunity to build an audience while generating revenue through adverts, sponsorships and affiliate marketing.

You don’t need expensive equipment to get started, either. Many successful travel creators began with nothing more than a smartphone and a willingness to learn.

Build An Email List

One thing many bloggers overlook in the early days is the importance of building an email list.

Social media platforms come and go, algorithms change constantly and traffic can be unpredictable. An email list gives you a direct connection to your audience. These are people who have actively chosen to hear from you, which makes them incredibly valuable.

You can create newsletters on platforms like Mailerlite to share new blog posts, recommend products, promote affiliate offers and keep readers engaged.

It might not seem exciting compared to social media growth, but it can become one of the most reliable assets your blog has.

Get Paid To Travel

For many travel bloggers, press trips are the dream. Imagine having flights, accommodation and activities covered while you’re creating content about the experience.

That’s essentially how press trips work. Tourism boards, hotels and travel companies invite creators to visit destinations in exchange for coverage.

Of course, these opportunities usually come after you’ve established yourself and built an audience. They also come with expectations. Some trips have fairly strict schedules and content requirements, so they aren’t quite the free holidays people sometimes imagine.

Still, they can be an excellent way to create content and strengthen relationships within the travel industry.

Keep Going!

One thing that’s worth remembering is that very few travel bloggers start earning significant money overnight. It takes consistency, patience and a lot of work behind the scenes.

Some posts will perform brilliantly, others won’t. Some months you’ll feel like you’re making progress, and others will feel much slower. That’s completely normal!

The bloggers who eventually turn their websites into successful businesses are usually the ones who keep going when everyone else gives up.

If you genuinely enjoy travel and love sharing your experiences, the opportunities to make money will become much easier to spot as your audience grows.
